back in europe--mainly in belgium, france, and italy--this is the way lace used to be made before machines took over the lace-making industry. 'bobbin lace' is sometimes called 'bone lace', because many times the bobbins were made out of bone. you can't see the bobbins here, so I'll have to post more pictures; but this lace is essentially woven with individually wound bobbins (acting sort-of as hanging shuttles) on top of a pattern, using pins to hold certain features in the weaving. this picture shows a piece of finished lace with all but the border pins removed.
any how, i've been meaning to take it up again, as i promised the woman who taught me to do this that i would do my part to keep a lost art alive...and it's addictive. ;)
