::the younger daughter:: not quite quilting...

i used to make bobbin lace. like, the REAL old fashioned kind. this style makes 'vintage' seem modern...
back in europe--mainly in belgium, france, and italy--this is the way lace used to be made before machines took over the lace-making industry. 'bobbin lace' is sometimes called 'bone lace', because many times the bobbins were made out of bone. you can't see the bobbins here, so I'll have to post more pictures; but this lace is essentially woven with individually wound bobbins (acting sort-of as hanging shuttles) on top of a pattern, using pins to hold certain features in the weaving. this picture shows a piece of finished lace with all but the border pins removed.
any how, i've been meaning to take it up again, as i promised the woman who taught me to do this that i would do my part to keep a lost art alive...and it's addictive. ;)

Hey, you didn't teach me one thing!

Maybe our next weekend should be a crafting/quilting weekend galore!

V. here. Oh I am so glad you are doing this again. It is amazing. YOU have so many talents. AND you are very patient to have done this. I love the little pillow you put this on to make it!
